How To Make A Website To Increase Sales For Your Small Business

If you own a small business where you would like to capture more leads and increase sales, the More Sales Website would be suited to you. In this 2.5 hour free WordPress tutorial, I will show you how to create an amazing lead generating website that creates highly targeted landing pages featuring your services.  A complete beginner can follow along in the video above, click by click, as no coding knowledge is required.

This website accomplishes two important goals:

  • Leads your prospective customers through a targeted sales funnel to a quote form to capture their contact information
  • Utilizes targeted landing pages to help rank your services higher in search engines and reduce your pay per click costs by increasing your page quality score

step oneThe first thing you will want to do when creating your new website is decide upon a domain name.  A domain name is the name you will give your website.  Luckily BlueHost is offering new users a free domain name (A $15 Value)  (If you already have a domain name and would simply like to the advantage of Bluehost's cheap hosting rates ($3.95/month) and amazing customer service, you can jump a couple of paragraphs below to the "I Already Have A Domain" section.

A domain name is basically your address on the internet.  tomtattle.com  is my domain name.  You will want to think of a few ideas for your domain name as you might discover your first idea has already been taken.  You can check to see if your domain name is available by simply testing your idea out in the blue box below.

It's a way to help me maintain this website and keep providing free tutorials that have helped thousands of people establish their online presence without spending thousands on a web developer and over priced web hosting.  I have been a BlueHost customer for over 4 years now and can honestly vouch for their great hosting service and equally great customer service.  I have used several web hosts over the past seven years, and I have been moving my websites to Bluehost for a reason.  I would not recommend something that I do not use myself.

Already Have A Domain Name And You Would Like To Build This Website At BlueHost?

No problem!  If you already have an existing business website and feel it's time for a redesign with a fresh, clean, modern look that is mobile friendly and not going to break the bank, you can also take advantage of this free tutorial and keep your existing domain name.

You will just simply need to click the green "Check Availability" button in the blue box above while leaving the field blank.

You will be taken to the following screen where you will enter your existing domain in the  "I have a domain name" box.

already have domain option

From there, you can follow along with the rest of the tutorial.

You will also need to do one extra added step.

Now this may seem a little bit geeky, but it is really not that hard.  If you already own a domain name and wish to move your hosting to BlueHost to build this new website, you will need to point your DNS (Domain Name System) to BlueHost servers.  The whole process on your end should take no longer than five minutes to complete and for the change to take effect should take anywhere from 1 to 36 hours.  Basically what we are doing is saying..."Hey internet, I used to have my website parked here for all the world to see and I am now moving it over here."  Very similar to when you move to a new house and have all of your mail rerouted to your new address.

The following procedure is how you would change your DNS settings if your domain was parked at GoDaddy.  If you have any questions, just simply contact your domain provider for assistance.

To modify, add, or delete name servers (DNS) for your domain(s):

  1. Log in to the GoDaddy.com Account Manager.
  2. Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names drop-down menu or the Manage Your Account list.
  3. Select the domain name you wish to modify using the checkboxes and then click Set Name Servers.
  4. Enter your updated name server information in the spaces provided under the blue Name Servers heading on the right side of your page and click Save Changes at the bottom. Your entries should look like this:
    ns1.bluehost.com
    ns2.bluehost.com

This will point your domain to BlueHost's servers and shortly later you will be able to follow the rest of the tutorial and build out your new business website.

step 2The second thing you will need to do is signup for web hosting.  Just like when you purchase a house, the house needs property to reside on. The same goes for a website, the website must be hosted on a special computer called a server that runs 24/7.  Once you selected your domain in step 1 you will need to select how long you would like to have your website hosted at BlueHost.  You can select 12, 24, or 36 months.  If you are a new company just starting out and you are testing the waters, perhaps the 12 month plan is the way to go and your investment is under $72 should your business venture not work as planned.  If you are an established business and plan on being around for years to come, I would advise signing up for the 36 month plan (under $50/year) as renewal rates are usually higher than the special introductory rate you are being offered.

Step threeThe third step to creating your own lead generating small business website involves installing and learning how to use a content management system.  The content management system we will be installing is called WordPress, which powers approximately 30% of websites on the internet.  The install can be done with a few button clicks and learning to use WordPress is simple if you have ever used any word processing programs such as Microsoft Word, you should quickly catch on to using WordPress.  Just simply follow along in the video tutorial above.

Structure For Your More Leads Business Website

So many business websites get it wrong by simply throwing up the standard Home, About, and Contact pages.

So many business owners do not understand how the search engines grade your page when it comes to pay-per-click advertising (one of the most effective lead generating opportunities available to the small business owner)

By creating targeted pages featuring each of your services, you can dramatically reduce your pay-per-click costs, or could be the difference between your ad showing  in the first position or not at all.  Think of it this way, you own a landscaping business, and would like to drive more leads for your deck building part of your business.  If you ran pay-per-click advertising on the search engines promoting your deck building service and directed the traffic to your landscaping websites home page, most people would quickly click the back button.  They were expecting to get information about deck building, not a general landscaping business offering all different services.

What should you write on your landing page to help with pay-per-click?

This section gives you the opportunity to strategically place targeted keywords that you wish to organically rank your business for.  This will help with your websites natural rankings in search and ALSO help reduce the cost of your pay per click campaigns by having the keywords you are targeting in your paid promotion campaigns on your landing page.

So many people get pay per click wrong and will target ads to their homepage.  Adwords Landing Page Quality Score is a very real thing and can be the difference between your ad showing in the top slot or not at all.  This is why we have dedicated pages to each of our services.

Some points to consider

  • Try to write between 200 to 500 words here
  • Target 3 keywords max
  • Do not be spammy, only mention those keywords 3 times max and make them look naturally structured throughout your content.  If you look spammy to the search engines, your website could get slapped with a ranking penalty.
