An Easy To Follow Video To Make Your Own Business Website
With No Step Skipped

step oneOr, scroll down for written instructions on how to get started

The very first thing you must do when building a website is come up with a domain name. A domain name is the address where people will find your website on the Internet. Often people will use their business name followed by.com or.ca if you live in Canada or.co.uk if you live in the UK. (example donnytrumppainting.com)Since the internet has been around for a few decades there is a possibility that your domain name has already been registered.

Simply enter your domain name idea in the box below and hit the "check availability" button to see if your idea is available.

If your domain name is available, simply click on the green "next" button and register it. Detailed instructions of the process are listed below with screen shots.

It's really easy and should take no longer than five to ten minutes to complete.  If you would rather, you can follow along with my video where I walk you through the process.

Already Have Your Own Domain?

No problem!  If you already have an existing business website and feel it's time for a redesign with a fresh, clean, modern look that is mobile friendly and not going to break the bank, you can also take advantage of this free tutorial and keep your existing domain name.

You will just simply need to click the green "Check Availability" button in the blue box above while leaving the field blank.

You will be taken to the following screen where you will enter your existing domain in the  "I have a domain name" box.

already have domain option

From there, you can follow along with the rest of the tutorial.

You will also need to do one extra added step.

Now this may seem a little bit geeky, but it is really not that hard.  If you already own a domain name and wish to move your hosting to BlueHost to build this new website, you will need to point your DNS (Domain Name System) to BlueHost servers.  The whole process on your end should take no longer than five minutes to complete and for the change to take effect should take anywhere from 1 to 36 hours.  Basically what we are doing is saying..."Hey internet, I used to have my website parked here for all the world to see and I am now moving it over here."  Very similar to when you move to a new house and have all of your mail rerouted to your new address.

The following procedure is how you would change your DNS settings if your domain was parked at GoDaddy.  If you have any questions, just simply contact your domain provider for assistance.

To modify, add, or delete name servers (DNS) for your domain(s):

  1. Log in to the GoDaddy.com Account Manager.
  2. Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names drop-down menu or the Manage Your Account list.
  3. Select the domain name you wish to modify using the checkboxes and then click Set Name Servers.
  4. Enter your updated name server information in the spaces provided under the blue Name Servers heading on the right side of your page and click Save Changes at the bottom. Your entries should look like this:
    ns1.bluehost.com
    ns2.bluehost.com

This will point your domain to BlueHost's servers and shortly later you will be able to follow the rest of the tutorial and build out your new business website.

step 2Web hosting in its simplest form is a high-end computer or server where all of the pictures and information from your website will be stored. When a potential customer lands on your website their computer will communicate with this server by downloading your website’s content. I have used close to a dozen web hosts in the past six years and I can honestly say BlueHost has been the most reliable for me and they are currently including a free domain name if you sign up for hosting.

What I look for in a web host

  1. Percentage of up time. Some web hosts are constantly down or off-line.
  2. Customer service. How quickly they respond or willingness to help.
  3. Cost
  4. Easy-to-use interface.

Disclosure. I do make a small commission from Bluehost should you decide to sign up with them and use my link I do appreciate the support and thank you. I hope all the information I have provided you on how to make your own website was of use to you. I would not promote Bluehost if I did not honestly feel they offered the best when it comes to hosting. I have been a Bluehost customer myself for the past three years.

You can research Bluehost hosting here and at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase.  For around $5 a month BlueHost offers fantastic hosting service that will not let your business down.

If video is not your thing and you would rater follow along with text and screenshots just simply click on the tab below and I will guide you through the setup process.

If the domain that you selected in the blue box above is available and you hit the next button you will be directed to the Bluehost website where you will land on their home page briefly and usually within five seconds be directed to the page above where you will need to enter your details.

Business Hosting optionsThe second page you will be required to enter information will be the one above asking you to choose your package information and billing details.

I have included four key points that you will want to consider.

  1. Account Plan.  The longer period you select, the cheaper your rate.  If you are in it for the long haul, go for the 36 month basic plan.  If you are new and not sure how long your business will be around, you might want to consider the 12 month basic plan.
  2. Domain Privacy Protection. For a dollar a month you can block spammers from finding your email address.  Also handy if you run a porn business and you do not want your grandma to find out.  I usually opt in for this one just to keep the spammers from soliciting.
  3. Site Backup Pro.  Honestly I find this to be a money grab and would advise you to untick this option.  Bluehost will do weekly backups of your site.  I guess that is the non "pro" version.
  4. Sitelock Security.  For $2 a month they will scan your site and tell you if you have been hacked.  I will show you some site security tips that will save you the $24 a year.

In summary, I usually untick all of these options.  Proceed to fill in your payment details and do not forget to agree to the terms and conditions before you hit the submit button.

Signup Success

You will see another screen where BlueHost will try to sell you more services, I just scroll to the bottom and click on "No Thanks" and that will lead you to the screen above.  You will now click on the "create your password" tab.

Create A Password

You will create your BlueHost account password at the screen above.  Be sure to tick the terms of service and create a password that is a minimum of 8 characters long, includes both upper and lower case letters, a number and a symbol.  You will want to write this down a store it in a safe place.

Congratulations!  You have just finished setting up your business website hosting.  Now you will need to proceed to Step 3 to learn how to install WordPress with BlueHost's easy one click WordPress install.

Step threeIn step three we will learn how to install WordPress at BlueHost with the easy to use one click feature.  BlueHost has made it super easy for you to have a website up and running in less than five minutes.  If the video is not your style and you would like to follow along with screenshots, just simply click on the tab below.

One Click Install WordPress

After creating your account password in step two you will be taken to a screen that looks very similar to the one above.  This will be called cpanel.  Once here you will want to scroll down to the "website" section and click on the "Install WordPress" button that I highlighted in red.

One Click WordPress Installer

Select your domain from the drop down (It should already be showing) and simply click on "Check Domain"

make your selections

Be sure to tick the terms and conditions box and then click on "Install Now".  A popup window will appear trying to sell you some themes.  The video I use shows you how to get a free theme, so you can close that window and wait approximately 30 seconds to a minute for the files to install on your new hosting account.

Install Complete

Once your install is complete you will get the orange bar at the top.  You will want to click on the "View Credentials" tab to obtain your new temporary password and username for your WordPress dashboard.  Please note these are different from your BlueHost username and password you created earlier.

view credentials

You will then be directed to the page above.  Scroll down until you see "View" button and click on it to see your new login information.

copy info

You will then be directed to the important screen where you will want to make a copy of your password and username.  You should also be emailed this information.  I blurred my information out for obvious reasons.  Also make note of your Admin URL.  This is the web address you will go to and enter your credentials.  Usually the admin URL is yoursite.com/wp-admin or just simply add /wp-admin after your new domain in your address bar. For now just simply click on the blue link beside "URL" after you have copied your details down.  I also like to copy the password so I can paste it in the next step.

wordpress login panel

You will land on the page above where you will enter your username and password for your website that you recorded in the last step and click "Log In".  Congratulations!  You are now in your WordPress dashboard and can start building your site.  Be sure to watch my videos for step by step instructions on how you can build an amazing business website with WordPress.
